His most recent book is Le Roman Noir de l'algue tueuse (1997, Ed. Belin, Paris; translated by D. Simberloff: Killer Algae, Chicago University Press, 1999). His areas of expertise include marine invasive algae (Caulerpa taxifolia), evaluation of reclamation impact, mapping marine littoral ecosystems and transplantation of seagrass beds.

Dr. Meinesz is a professional diver who has made nearly 5000 dives in the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea (Aqaba, Djedah, Yambu), Persic Gulf (Abu Dhabi), tropical Atlantic Ocean (Guadeloupe, St. Marteen, Virgin Islands), tropical Pacific Ocean (Tahiti, Tuamotu, Ishigaki -Japan), temperate Pacific Ocean (Seto Inland Sea: Hiroshima). As an Aquanaut with NOAA-USA, he has twice spent one-week periods in Hydrolab (-15m in the Virgin Islands). As a Marine officer (Lieutenant de Vaisseau), he has made 20 dives in a pocket submarine "Griffon" (-500m).

Dr. Meinesz has been a member of the scientific advisory board of three marine parks for 20 years: the National park of Port-Cros; Natural park of Scandola (Corsica); and President of the scientific committee of the natural parks of Lavezzi and Cerbicale (Corsica). For the past ten years, he has also been President of the Environment Commission of the Economical and Social Council of the region Provence-Alpes Côte d'Azur (4.7 million inhabitants) and Administrator of the Agency for the Environment of the region Provence-Alpes Côte d'Azur.

Prof. Dr. Barbaros CELIKKOL

DR. BARBAROS CELIKKOL, PROFESSOR OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AND OCEAN ENGINEERING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

Research Areas

Open Ocean Aquaculture Engineering, Marine Oil Spill Response Technology, Environmental Modeling

Research Emphasis

Dr. Celikkol's interests lie in the field of kinematics, dynamics, and vibration of mechanical systems; computational mechanics; modeling of ocean systems, particularly coastal and estuarial circulation, and dynamics of flexible machine elements, and his research interests are in the areas of ocean engineering such as open ocean aquaculture engineering, environmental modeling and oil spill response technology. His current research projects are: Open Ocean Aquaculture: Offshore Engineering (funded by NOAA), Open Ocean Aquaculture: Infrastructure (funded by NOAA), and Hampton/Seabrook Harbor Study (funded by the New Hampshire Port Authority).

Prof. Dr. Brian AUSTIN

DR. BRIAN AUSTIN, PROFESSOR OF FISH PATHOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING, AND DIRECTOR OF THE INSTUTTE OF AQUACULTURE

Dr. Brian Austin, has been Professor of fish pathology at the University of Stirling, and Director of the Instutute of Aquaculture. His areas of expertise include fish pathology and marine biotechnology. Specifically, he research the taxonomy, ecology, pathogenicity mechanisms (emphasising haemolysins and extracellular enzymes) and control strategies (principally vaccines and probiotics) for bacterial fish pathogens, especially aeromonads and vibrios. The work on marine biotechnology involves the development of novel antibiotics for the control of antibiotic-resistant strains of human pathogens, notably methicillin-resistant Stapthylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin resistant enterococci.

Prof. Dr. Daniel BENETTI

DR. DANIEL BENETTI, DIRECTOR OF AQUACULTURE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI’S ROSENSTIEL SCHOOL OF MARINE AND ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE

Dr. Daniel Benetti is a Professor and the Director of Aquaculture at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, where he was the Chairman of the Division of Marine Affairs and Policy from 2003 to 2008. He has over 30 years experience in aquaculture worldwide. Besides his academic responsibilities at RSMAS – where he teaches the 3 graduate level core courses of the Aquaculture Track degree —, he carries out scientific and R&D projects on technology development and environmental issues related to aquaculture. He specializes in hatchery and open ocean growout technologies of marine finfish species, including, most recently, cobia, Seriola (yellowtail jacks), snapper, tuna, mahimahi and flounder. He has published over 100 articles in aquaculture science and technology, has extensive experience with the industry and has been a consultant for the private and government sectors in Latin America, U.S., Europe, Asia, Caribbean and Australia, where he has partnered with the government and the industry to spearhead advanced technology for hatchery and sustainable offshore aquaculture development. He is the scientific coordinator of several offshore aquaculture projects and operations in the US and abroad. He is consulting for technology transfer of marine fish hatchery and growout for the government and private sector of a number of countries in 5 continents in project development for sustainable aquaculture and environmental monitoring programs with focus on open ocean and coastal mariculture operations. His work is centered on innovative research to ensure that seafood production through mariculture is wholesome, environmentally sustainable and economic viable.

WELCOME TO AQUACYPRUS 2014

AquaCyprus-2014 is a symposium organized with the aim of generating a platform for discussion on current and future concerns of the Ocean Environment. According to FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) the global demand for food will need to increase by 70% within 2050, and with its around 40 million metric tons of production today, the aquaculture industry has the potential of feeding an estimated world population of 9 billion people in 2050. The Ocean Environment is serving the world’s increasing population not only as a source for food supply, but also as energy source and development of transport routes. Sustainable usage of the ocean environment, a challenging task facing human kind, can be achieved by understanding the present condition of marine resources and successful application of innovations for the marine industry.

AquaCyprus-2014 will contribute to the discussion on how to continue the growth of marine industry especially the aquaculture industry in a sustainable way with innovation technology and promote to global food and nutrition security.
